In fourth grade ELA Ms. Brown's class participated in a Socratic seminar where they collected and presented evidence of which person was the most great hearted and why. Then each student voted on which person deserved the award and we had a clear winner. It was great to see students collaborate and work together to prove their claims.

For three weeks in October, students at Benner Elementary Schools participated in the Kids’ Heart Challenge. This nation-wide program, which is sponsored by the American Heart Association, helps children learn about the benefits of regular physical activity and cardiovascular health. During physical education class, students practiced various jumping skills in preparation for an all school event that included jump rope activities for students in grades 2-5 and a jumping obstacle course for Kindergarten and First Grade students.

In addition to all the fun, they had the opportunity to raise money for a great cause. Together, students at Benner Elementary School raised $16,731.46 which was the second highest total ever! In the 18 years of participating in the event, the school has raised nearly $115,000! These funds support vital heart and stroke research, as well as educational programs. In addition, because of the kids’ hard work in raising that amount, the school will receive a $1,500 certificate toward the purchase of new Physical Education equipment.

Mr. Cyone wants to thank everyone who helped out and supported the event, as well as all the students for making this year’s Kids’ Heart Challenge a huge success.

The 4th Grade students concluded their electricity unit with an engaging hands-on project: creating electric circuit wands using a variety of materials. These included LED lights, batteries, copper tape, electrical tape, and popsicle sticks. Students applied their knowledge of complete circuits to design and build functional wands — and by the end, every student successfully lit up their creation to bring a little “magic” to science!
