In Mrs. Whitman's class at Bellefonte Elementary, students have been studying "How can humans protect themselves in an earthquake?" In an effort to explore this question, the students read about buildings that are designed to resist earthquakes. Then, they put their learning to action and created their own "earthquake resistant buildings" and tested them on our shaker table. Pulling the shaker table further results in a larger earthquake. Some of the creations were able to resist damage after the shaking and some collapsed. Learning took place regardless of the outcome, as the students were able to evaluate the results and make changes like real engineers.

On Fridays at Marion-Walker Elementary, Mrs. Roos’ kindergarten students celebrate their week of hard work by incorporating a lot of extra FUN into their learning. They start their “FUN-YAY FRI-YAYS” off with flashlight reading. Mrs. Roos closes the blinds, shuts off the lights, puts some Reading Nook Ambience from YouTube on the Promethean Board, and passes out flashlights. The students get their book boxes, find a quiet place to read, and read to themselves for 10 minutes. When the timer goes off, students quietly find a partner and partner read for an additional 10 minutes.
