BeLA

BASD’s Online Learning Academy

Did you know that Bellefonte Area School District provides an online learning platform for BASD students that includes not only from an online program, but also courses created and taught by its own teachers? The Bellefonte eLearning Academy, known as BeLA, is a premier virtual learning program for grades K-12. It combines Edgenuity/Imagine Learning, a national online platform, with courses designed and taught by Bellefonte’s own teachers, especially at the high school level (grades 9–12).

Why is this option a strong choice for a learner in the district?  Edgenuity offers over 400 K–12 courses, including core, elective, and AP options, all taught by PA-certified teachers.  The program features flexible, self-paced learning, on-demand tutoring, and multimodal instruction. Then at the high school level, students have the opportunity to take a variety of courses that are taught by the district’s high school educators and align with in-person curriculum. The BeLA teachers receive ongoing professional training in virtual education.

While learning online, BeLA students are still considered part of the district.  They have the same extracurricular activity opportunities that in-person learners have available to them.  This can include participation in clubs, sports, dances, and graduation activities.  They can also still attend some in-person classes such as Child Development and go to the local technical school - Central PA Institute of Science and Technology.  BeLA students also have the same types of support for their academic and emotional needs.  There is daily teacher availability via email, Google Meet, or in-person meetings.  Frequent communication documents are sent home, including newsletters, progress reports, and community service opportunities.  Lastly, both special education and mental health supports are integrated into the program.  Each student has a school counselor assigned to him or her and if a student needs special education support, a specialized learning support teacher is available for that specific academic assistance.

What does a model online student look like?  The ideal BeLA student that will thrive in an asynchronous and independent model is a self-motivated and an organized learner who benefits from a flexible schedule—whether due to sports, health, or personal preference.  Sydney Benner is a sophomore within the BeLA program and has been doing Sydney Bennerexceptionally well with her classes.  When asked why BeLA has been a great fit for her, she responded with, “I think BeLA is a great fit for me because sometimes it is super hard to make it to school with any appointments or anything else going on in my life, whereas with BeLA it is easy to do my school work whenever and wherever I need to.”

To learn more about the BeLA program, prospective families can reach out to Dr. Jen Brown, the principal, or visit the district’s website at www.basd.net.  The Bellefonte Area School District  looks forward to growing its online community and for providing the best options for all of its students and families and their needs.
