Message to BASD Community – Wi-Fi Access Changes for 2026–27
The Bellefonte Area School District is committed to providing a safe, secure, and high-performing technology environment that supports teaching and learning.
Beginning with the 2026–27 school year, the district will be making an important change to Wi-Fi access across all buildings. We will no longer offer open-access wireless networks. Instead, a password-protected Guest Wi-Fi network will be available for visitors who require internet access for school-supported purposes.
This change is being made for several key reasons:
Cybersecurity: Open networks present increased risk for unauthorized access and potential security threats. A controlled environment helps better protect student, staff, and district data.
Maximizing Bandwidth for Education: Limiting access ensures that available bandwidth is prioritized for instructional use, allowing students and staff to fully utilize digital learning tools without interruption.
Evolving Industry Standards: School districts across the country are moving away from open networks in favor of more secure, managed access.
In addition, staff members who need internet access for personal devices will have the option to register those devices with the district’s MIS Department. Approved devices will be granted internet-only access.
Please note that student cell phones will not be permitted to connect to the school’s wireless network. Additionally, personal cell phones used by members of the public will not be able to access district Wi-Fi while in our buildings or when attending school events such as athletic contests, concerts, or plays.
We understand that connectivity is important, and we will ensure that appropriate access is available when needed for educational and school-related activities.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support as we work to maintain a secure and effective learning environment for all.
