Fort Fisher acted as the remaining defense to the only open Confederate port, Wilmington.The navy led by Admiral Porter bombard the Confederates at Fort Fisher beginning on January 13. Alfred Terry and the landing force then attacked the Confederate defenses suffering heavy casualties, but after hours of fighting, the Confederates surrendered the fort. This put the nail in the coffin for the Confederates as Wilmington could now be taken and many of the military supplies the Army of Northern Virginia needed would be cut off.
