Battle Summary:
This Battle was part of the Siege of Petersburg and was part of a dual offensive. The goal of this mission was to cut off the railroad south of Petersburg and pull troops away from Petersburg. Although the Union took heavier casualties than the defending Confederates, they succeeded in their overall goal. In addition, several African American soldiers won the Medal of Honor from this battle for their heroism.
