  • Senior Institute 5K to benefit community member battling cancer

Each year, the senior institute class at Bellefonte Area High School hosts a 5K that benefits a community member. This year, in the event’s fourth year, the race is being held in support of Bellefonte community member Ramona Book, the mother of two BAHS students, who was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Senior institute is a class for seniors in high school. Those interested in joining must apply to be a part of it, teacher Jessica Lloyd said.

The class combines English and art.

“The projects in art class reflect ideas learned in English class,” Lloyd said. “The biggest part of the year -- students choose someone in the community with a medical need and organize a charity event to raise money for them during the second half of the year.”

The class is also hosting a pork barbeque-type picnic on April 22 at Governors Park. More details will be released at a later date, as logistics are still being sorted out.
