• Girls' soccer team hones skills at annual summer soccer camp

camp1Heading into the 2019 soccer season, the girls’ team from Bellefonte Area High School has been working hard with optional winter and spring indoor sessions following the 2018 season and outdoor optional summer sessions. Mandatory two-a-day training began when the season kicked off Aug. 12 leading up to the first day of school.

The varsity and junior varsity teams even participated in the Raiders Soccer Academy through Shippensburg University in July that allowed them to partake in a four-day intensive soccer clinic and work with a variety of college coaches from schools in Pennsylvania and other parts of the East Coast and Midwest. This year, the coaches and players worked exclusively with Pat McGinnis, an assistant soccer coach at Ohio Dominican University. Last year, they worked with the head soccer coach from Shippensburg.

Since the season began more than two weeks ago, they had two scrimmages against West Branch and Holy Redeemer, and will hold its annual Raider Classic tournament on Aug. 31 with its first game 9 a.m. against Hollidaysburg at Rogers Stadium. Teams from Juniata Senior High School and Selinsgrove Area High School are also participating in the tournament. They play each other 9 a.m. at the middle school soccer field. The losing teams from the first games will play at 1:30 p.m.; the winners of the first games will play after.
