Girls’ basketball team to honor teachers
The girls’ varsity basketball team at Bellefonte Area High School is doing something new this year to honor teachers who've had a positive effect on them. The game Dec. 15 is deemed Teacher Appreciation Night.
The junior varsity team plays at 6 p.m. and the varsity team follows with a game against Penns Valley Area.
Coach Adam Gearhart said the team is inviting all teachers to come out to watch the games. Each player will additionally select a teacher to be honored during a ceremony between the JV and Varsity games. All other teachers in attendance also will be recognized.
“This will be the first time we are hosting a Teacher Appreciation Night,” Gearhart said. “It's special because we all have that one teacher that we remember and I often hear the girls talking about specific teachers. The booster club and coaching staff thought it would be nice to have a game where we honor specific teachers and recognize all that are in attendance.”
Gearhart said he found inspiration to host this night after seeing it done last season at Philipsburg-Osceola Area.
“During their ceremony, I turned and looked at our Booster Club President Krissy Steiner, and she immediately said, ‘Done’,” Gearhart said.

They also teach at Marion-Walker Elementary School, Bellefonte Area Middle School and Central Pennsylvania Institude of Science and Technology.
