ALL ABOUT MRS. COVONE

I am the youngest of five children and grew up in Upper Burrell, PA, which is in Western Pennsylvania. My family and I have lived in Bellefonte for 12 years. I went to college at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Communications with minors in Spanish and Public Relations. In 2007, I finished a teaching certification program and received my PA teaching certificate. I taught fifth grade at St. John School last year and am thrilled  to be teaching fourth grade at Benner Elementary this year! In my spare time, I like to spend time with my family, jog, read, cook, and of course, watch the Steelers!

Homework/Assignment Book/Binder:

The students are expected to complete ALL assignments each evening, and consistent completion of homework contributes to a student's final grade. There is no excuse for incomplete or “lost” homework.  If  a student does not have their homework completed, they will be required to stay in during their recess time to make it up, and the incomplete homework will be noted . I understand that there may be times when family emergencies occur and a student is unable to complete their homework.  If this is the case, please send me a note or email explaining the situation.  The student will be required to make up the missing assignments as soon as possible.  Please understand that after-school commitments (baseball games, dance class, etc.) are not valid excuses for unfinished homework assignments.

Students will be assigned homework Monday through Thursday nights in Spelling and Math, spending approximately 40 minutes (10 minutes per grade level) on their homework. They will also be required to complete occasional assignments in Science, Social Studies, or Language Arts. A few homework assignments will be graded, and the students will be informed when this will occur. There will be no homework assigned on the weekends, except when a student needs to finish a project.

All students are required to copy the assignments  exactly as they appear on the assignment board in their assignment books. These assignment books will be checked daily for completeness and accuracy which helps build responsibility for future grades.

All students will have a three-ring binder  and homework folder in which to keep track of and store assignments, assignment book, communications from school, and assignment/test scores. The homework folder should be checked daily by parents for any communication from school. The back pocket in the binder should be checked every Friday.  This pocket will contain assignments and scores from the previous week. The student is to record the date and the number of items returned on the parent signature sheet located in the back of the binder. In addition, the student needs to have this sheet signed by a parent and return it to me the following Monday (or the first day of the next week). By signing the parent signature sheet, a parent is communicating to me that they have reviewed their child's assignments and scores.

Reading Log:

Each week, each student needs to read for a total of 60 minutes at home. They will be given a Reading Log every Monday on which they have to record what book they have read and how long they read. The Reading Log is due every Monday and requires a parent signature. Ideally, students should read for 15 minutes four days a week. This way they are not reading all at once to "catch up", maintaining consistency for independent at-home reading.

**Parent signature sheet and Reading Log both require a parent signature and both are due every Monday or the first day of the school week!
