Coaching Staff

 Head Coach: Denny Leathers

This year Coach Leathers begins his 27th season at the helm of the Bellefonte Red Raider baseball program.  Upon graduating from Bellefonte High in 1963 he began a professional baseball career that lasted five-and-a-half seasons. He initially signed and played for the Philadelphia Phillies, and then later for the San Francisco Giant organization.

As a youth, Denny was a proud member of Bellefonte's 1958 state championship Little League all-star team; three years later, he and many of the same players brought home a Babe Ruth League state title.  During his high school playing days, Coach Leathers pitched and played shortstop for the Red Raiders, batting .500 in his junior season.  In the summer before he signed with the Phillies, he threw four no-hitters in the various leagues in which he participated.  That same year, Denny struck out a personal-best 21 hitters while giving up just one hit in an eight-inning 2-1 American Legion playoff loss.

While playing professionally, Denny compiled an overall 26-16 record on the mound. During his stint in the minor leagues, he recalls pitching against future Hall of Famers Johnny Bench, Rod Carew, and Reggie Jackson, to name a few.  Denny jokes that he did his part to help "build the confidence" of these legendary hitting stars.  One of his fondest memories during his pro playing days was when one of the greatest hitters of all time Ted Williams, watched him pitch an 11 inning, four hit, 12 strikeout, 1-0 shutout while pitching for the then Miami Marlins of the Florida State League.  Mr. Williams (known as the Splendid Splinter during his playing days) was at that time working for the Houston Astros. He was quoted in the Miami Herald following that game as saying that "Leathers' delivery reminded him of ex-Boston Red Sox pitcher Bill Monbouquette in his ease of delivery and effectiveness."  Unfortunately, Denny's professional career ended early as a result of several debilitating knee injuries and resulting surgeries.  Nonetheless, he continued to play amateur ball until the age of 56.  Over the years, Denny earned amateur All-American status in both baseball and men's fastpitch softball, and in 1976, he won the Men's National Fastpitch Softball Player of the Year award.

Denny began coaching in 1974, serving first as a JV coach and then as an assistant to head coach Don Robinson. He claims that assisting and learning from Coach Robinson over the years was invaluable in preparing him to be the eventual  head coach.  He also credits his former high school basketball coach Dick Bell for helping to instill in him the true meaning of the word "coach."  He took over the program in 1982 and has amassed 347 coaching victories since then, thanks to winning records in 24 of his 26 seasons.  During his tenure, the red and white have collected seven Central Penn League championships, two District 6 titles, and one MAC championship.  His 1987 team, which finished third in the state, was ranked as high as sixth in the nation by USA Today.  Lefty Eric Milton, recently with the Cincinnati Reds, pitched and played for Coach Leathers from 1990 to 1993.  Numerous other Raiders have gone on to play ball at the collegiate level.

Coach Leathers graduated from Lock Haven University in 1970 with a bachelors degree in Secondary Education.  He later earned both a masters degree and principalship certificate at Penn State University.  Though now retired, Denny taught Geography and History at the Bellefonte Middle School for 35 years.  To keep busy during the off-season, the Red Raider coach runs "Better Ball," offering baseball and softball hitting and pitching instruction to the youth in the Centre Region.  He and his wife Bonnie have three grown children and six grandchildren.

The game of baseball has a long tradition in the Leathers family. One of the first industrial successes in the town of Dickson, Tennessee was the relocation of A. H. Leathers from Pennsylvania to establish Leathers Handle Factory in 1897. The company became famous for manufacturing the “Dixie Swatter” baseball bat which was popular with both professionals and amateurs.  A. H. Leathers (1867 - 1932) was the second cousin twice removed of Denny Leathers.

Assistant Coach:  Mike Snyder

Mike Snyder has coached baseball at Bellefonte for the past 20 years and is currently the varsity assistant coach. In addition, he served as an assistant football coach for the Red Raiders for eleven campaigns, and is now an assistant football coach at State College High School, his alma mater. While a student at State High Mike acquired multiple letters in wrestling, baseball, and football.  Mr. Snyder played three years of football at Lock Haven University and later went on to earn his BS in education from Penn State.  In his nine seasons coaching football at State College he has helped send 30 State High football players to Division 1 schools.  He has coached two All Americans, and two players who are currently in the NFL. Over the years Mike has been a tremendous asset to the Raider baseball program.  He is a seventh grade Mathematics teacher at the Bellefonte Middle School. Coach Snyder and his wife Lisa have three children and live in Boalsburg.

Junior Varsity Coach:  John Wetzler

John Wetzler graduated from B. E. A. High School in 1968 where he participated in football, wrestling, and baseball.  As a Milesburg resident he was encouraged to play Little League Baseball in Bellefonte by the late Harold "Pickle" Rossman.  He was named to the all-star team as an eleven and twelve year old.  He went on to play VFW Teener Baseball in Bellefonte and was an integral part of a team managed by Dick Leathers that won the 1966 Pennsylvania State Championship and then went on to place fifth in the Nationals.  John graduated from Lock Haven University, where he played football in 1972, and earned his Masters degree in Secondary School Counseling from Penn State in 1983.  Mr. Wetzler is currently a Guidance Counselor at the High School.

John served as the district's Head Football Coach from 1984 to 1997.  During that time he compiled a 70-66-4 record.  He was inducted into the Central Pennsylvania Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 2001 and the District 6 Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2006.  In 1989 his football team won the first PIAA District 6 football title in our school history after defeating Somerset 47-8 in the district finals.  That squad finished the year with an overall 12-1 record.  His 70 victories ranks him second on the all time Bellefonte football win list behind legendary head coach Bill Luther.  John racked up an amazing 133 victories while losing only 37 in his seven years as the Head Softball Coach.  His teams won Mountain League titles in 1999 and 2005 along with District 6 titles from 2000 through 2005.  John's 2002 team finished second in the state.

John married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann Hendershot (BHS class of 1969), in 1972.  John and his wife are the proud parents of Jeff and B. J.  Jeff is currently employed with the University while B. J. lost a valiant battle with melanoma cancer in 2006.  The Wetzlers have four grandchildren.  In his spare time John works for Joel Confer as a part-time automobile sales consultant.  He enjoys golf, Texas hold'em, fly fishing, traveling with his wife, and of course spending lots of time with his grandchildren.

John's first experience in sports at Bellefonte was as a volunteer JV baseball coach under Ralph Gray and head coach Don Robinson back in 1973.  He feels that he has made a "full circle" in his many athletic and coaching experiences as he returns to baseball for the 2008 campaign.

 Volunteer Coach: Pat Masullo

Pat is a 1978 graduate of Bellefonte High School where he played baseball and football.  He was an outstanding catcher and a very dangerous hitter for the Red Raiders during his High School playing days. Mr. Masullo has spent 18 years as a Raider baseball volunteer assistant coach and continues, as he has for years, to run the voluntary late winter indoor baseball program.  Coach Masullo also served as the head Jr. High wrestling coach for nine seasons, and coached football at his alma mater from 1985 to 1992 at both the varsity and jayvee levels. In 1992, not to leave the girls out, he volunteered to help coach the girls softball team. Mr. Masullo's love of Bellefonte and its sports system is obvious, as his many years of service to the District and our kids is exemplary. Pat, and his wife Carol, have three boys and live in Bellefonte.

 Volunteer Coach: Jeremy Rellinger

Jeremy Rellinger is currently a ninth grade Science teacher at our High School. He has been involved with organized baseball for the past 25 years in the Central Michigan area prior to moving to Centre County in June of 2007. His involvement was a product of his environment, as the Central Michigan area has a strong baseball presence with a great deal of support from the many surrounding communities.

Coach Rellinger comes from an excellent high school program that stressed a focused work ethic, teamwork, and a constant development of the fundamental skills of the game.  As a senior at Mt. Pleasant High, Jeremy hit an impressive .380.  In recent years Mt. Pleasant has captured two Michigan State titles in their classification.

Jeremy continued his playing days after high school by joining an amateur men's league team in the Central Michigan area. This league featured many current and former college players from all levels.  Jeremy played 10 seasons as a starter at 2nd base and as a centerfielder.  He also played in a wood bat baseball league in Flint, Michigan for several seasons where he had obtained his first teaching position.  When Jeremy first moved to Pennsylvania he played in the State College Senior Men's 28+ Baseball League.

Coach Rellinger's baseball coaching experience began while at Genesee High School in the Flint, Michigan area.  Jeremy has been able to develop his knowledge of practice organization, player development, and game management from some of the best high school coaches in Michigan.  He was the head coach for an 8th grade team in 2005.  The next year he was named the varsity assistant coach, and in 2007 he became the junior varsity mentor.

Welcome aboard.

Volunteer Coach:  Seth Holderman

Seth Holderman is a 1992 graduate of Bellefonte High and was a member of the Red Raider's '92 CPL Championship baseball squad, as well as an outstanding tailback for the Raider football team.  Seth earned a B. S. in Environmental Studies from Shippensburg University in 1996 and was a standout running back on the Ship football team during his years there.

Seth holds the all time stolen base record at his alma mater with a whopping 30 during his senior high school season.  He hit .441 in 1992. In the second game of the year versus State College that season he hit two home runs, went four for four at the plate, and had 10 RBIs in a 12-0 lopsided five inning Raider victory.  This was the highest RBI total ever recorded by a Red Raider in any single game.

Seth is currently employed at Penn Terra Engineering, Inc., in State College where he assists in the coordination of most of the companies surveying activities.
