SCIED 470: Teacher as Researcher (1-3 credits) – SUMMER / Instructor: Kate

This course is an independent study and has been used by teachers to write
science curriculum. This could fulfill the Self-Directed option of the
Differentiated Supervision Plan.

C&S 498D: Peer Coaching for Practicing Teachers (3 cr) – FALL /
Instructors: Jen Hoover and Kate Sillman
Teachers will learn/review the aspects of clinical supervision, including
several observation tools, then pair and peer coach (an option of the
Differentiated Supervision Plan) with a colleague to improve specific areas of
classroom practice. You may take this course with another teacher in the same
building and peer coach together in the upcoming school year; or partner / peer
coach with one who has been approved by the building principal.
When: We will meet on Wednesdays after school from 3:30-5:30 PM from
September 15 to October 20 at the Bellefonte Area Middle School. Then, beginning
in November, monthly meetings will be held (the exact day and time depends on
the schedules of the participants) throughout the school year to support the
implementation.

C&S 498A: Classroom Environment: Managing Behavior and Accommodating for
Learning (3 cr)-FALL / Instructors: Teresa Stouffer and Kate Sillman
Strategies to manage student behavior will be shared and implemented. Since
some behavioral problems can be prevented with the use of accommodations and
modifications, their appropriate use will be explored. Strategies such as
responsive classroom, co-teaching, and differentiated instruction will also be
explored.
When: Mondays after school from 3:30-5:30 PM, onsite at a school in the
district, from Sept 13 to Dec 6

C&S 470: Becoming a More Effective Mentor Teacher! (3 cr) – SPRING /
Instructors: Eve Shellenberger and Kate Sillman
Teachers will become more skilled at participating in the cycle of clinical
supervision. Various data collection tools and their appropriate use will be
explored. Cycles of clinical supervision will be done between mentor and student
teacher OR between participants in this course as peer coaching, or with another
teacher who has had training in peer coaching. Peer coaching is one of the
options within the Differentiated Supervision Plan.
When: Mondays after school from 3:30-5:30 PM, onsite at a school in the
district; January 17-April 25
