Elks National Foundation
2009 Most Valuable Student Scholarship

 

 

Online at www.elks.org, you will find a downloadable application for this scholarship.  Applications will also be available by contacting your local Elks lodge office.  Instructions and guidelines are provided online.  The scholarships are for one year only. 

There are several levels of national competition including awards ranging from -
2 awards of $60,000
2 of $40,000
2 of $20,000
2 of $16,000
2 of $12,000
4 of $10,000
4 of $8,000
and 482 of $4,000.

In addition, Pennsylvania Elks State Association provides one-time grants of $1,200 to 62 Pennsylvania students each year.

2009 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest 

It takes courage to stand up for your beliefs.  Some elected officials risk their careers to do right by their community and country.  In Profiles in Courage, John F. Kennedy described eight U.S. elected officials who demonstrated political courage.

Here's your chance to write a new profile in courage.

The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation invites U.S. high school students to write an original essay of less than 1,000 words that demonstrates an understanding of political courage as described by John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage.

There is a flyer in the Guidance office listing all the guidelines and other information needed regarding this essay.

1st place - $5,000 and an expense-paid trip to Boston.  Winner will receive recognition by Caroline Kennedy and Senator Edward M. Kennedy at the Profile in Courage Award ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston, Massachusetts.

2nd place - $1,000

Up to five finalists - $500 each

Entrepreneurial Scholarship

To qualify:
     * Own your own business for at least one year
     * Have at least 1 paid employee
     * Graduate high school in 2009
     * Go to any 4-year college or university within the 50 states

Receive up to $10,000 per year for all 4 years (total of $40,000)

Burger King Scholars

For a student to qualify, he/she must be a high school senior and a U.S. resident that meets the following criteria.
   
- Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher
     - Work part-time an average of 15 hours per week or 40 weeks per year
     - Actively involved in community service activities
     - Demonstrate financial need
     - Plan to enroll in an accredited two/or four-year college, university, or vocational/technical school by Fall of the application year.

2008 KFC Colonel's Scholars Program

This scholarship is dedicated to assisting students with financial need who plan to pursue a bachelor's degree at a public institution within their legal state of residence.  To qualify, a student must be:
   *   graduating from high school this academic year (between 12/1/08 and 8/31/09)
   *   Maintaining a minimum high school cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
   *   Enrolling in a public, in-state college or university (start date no later than 9/30/09)
   *   Pursuing a bachelor's degree
   *   A U.S. citizen or permanent resident

Students can complete their application online at www.kfcscholars.org.

 

$20,000 - $5,000 per year for tuition, fees, books, and room and board.

Online application will be available from December 1, 2008 through February 10, 2009.

       

Flying J Scholarship Program

Selection criteria will include the consideration of academic performance, personal data as described in the brochure, an outside appraisal, and financial need.  To be eligible to apply, a student must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Empire Beauty School

Application requirements:

- Must be a current high school senior graduating high school and enrolling at an Empire school located in Hanover, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lehigh Valley, Reading, Wyoming Valley, Pottsville, Shamokin Dam, Williamsport, Lebanon,  York or State College.
- Must be carrying a minimum 3.00 GPA at the end of their junior year of high school.
- Must enroll for the entire 1260 hour Cosmetology Program.

*Applicants may not be children of Empire employees.

Ultimate Scholarships

All high school seniors are eligible to win the Ultimate Scholarship.  We are looking for well-rounded students, so you don't need to be the class president or have the highest GPA to be considered.  Winners will be selected based on the personal qualities addressed in their essay.

Award amounts are yet to be determined, but have been valued between $500 and $2,000 historically.

BigSun Scholarship

- We are offering an annual scholarship to a deserving student.
- All student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of which sport they are participating in.
- The successful applicant will be a high school senior or be attending a post secondary institute and currently involved in some sport at this institution.
